Soul Urge (Heart's Desire) Number Explained

What this page is: an explanation of how the Soul Urge number is calculated from the vowels of a full birth name and how each number is traditionally read. What it is not: a forecast, a personality test or professional advice. Numerology is not scientifically validated, so use each description as a prompt for reflection.
The Soul Urge number, also called the Heart's Desire number, is made from the vowels of your full birth name. Numerology reads it as the motive underneath behavior: what a person wants when no one is watching, as distinct from how they come across.

How the Soul Urge number is calculated
- Write the full birth name and clean it as for any name number: spaces, hyphens, apostrophes, periods and commas are dropped, and accented letters become plain Latin letters.
- Pick out the vowels A, E, I, O and U. The letter W is never a vowel.
- Decide each Y with the rule in the next section.
- Add the values of the vowels, taken across the whole name in one pass.
- Reduce the total digit by digit, stopping if you land on 11, 22 or 33.
| Vowel | A | E | I | O | U | Y (when it counts) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Value | 1 | 5 | 9 | 6 | 3 | 7 |
The Y rule
Y is the one letter that changes sides. In Soul Aura's engine it counts as a vowel in two situations: the name contains no A, E, I, O or U anywhere, or the letters directly before and after it are both consonants. Anywhere else it is a consonant. Spaces are removed before the neighbors are checked, so a Y that ends a first name looks at the first letter of the surname.
| Name (invented) | Where each Y sits | Counted as | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maya Young | between A and A; between A and O | consonant, consonant | A vowel stands beside each Y, and other vowels exist |
| Yves Lynch | first letter; between L and N | consonant, vowel | Nothing comes before the first Y, while the second has consonants on both sides |
| Cyrus Lynd | between C and R; between L and N | vowel, vowel | Each Y has a consonant on both sides |
| Lynn Wyss | between L and N; between W and S | vowel, vowel | The name has no A, E, I, O or U at all |
| Lily Brandt | last letter of Lily, before B | vowel | With the space removed it sits between L and B |
| Sydney Marlow | between S and D; between E and M | vowel, consonant | Only the first has consonants on both sides |
A worked example: Maria Elena Santos
The name is invented. Only the vowels are added, and the parts below are shown for readability: the engine adds all of them once.
| Name part | Vowels and values | Part total |
|---|---|---|
| Maria | A 1, I 9, A 1 | 11 |
| Elena | E 5, E 5, A 1 | 11 |
| Santos | A 1, O 6 | 7 |
The sum is 11 + 11 + 7 = 29, and 2 + 9 = 11. Eleven is a Master Number, so the reduction stops and the Soul Urge number is 11. The engine prints "Vowels: A=1, I=9, A=1, E=5, E=5, A=1, A=1, O=6 → Total: 29 → 11". A vowel total can also be a Master Number outright: the invented name Maya Young has vowels A, A, O and U, which add to 11 with no reduction at all.
Spelling changes the Soul Urge number
Because only the vowels count, a swapped vowel or a Y changes the result at once. Here are two invented pairs, with the engine's totals.
| Spelling | Vowels counted | Total → Soul Urge | Karmic debt flag |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney Marlow | Y 7, E 5, A 1, O 6 | 19 → 1 | 19/1 |
| Sidney Marlow | I 9, E 5, A 1, O 6 | 21 → 3 | none |
| Leila Park | E 5, I 9, A 1, A 1 | 16 → 7 | 16/7 |
| Leyla Park | E 5, A 1, A 1 | 7 → 7 | none |
A total of 13, 14, 16 or 19 before reduction gets a label in the engine. Sydney Marlow's 19 is flagged 19/1 (“Power abuse — Service and compassion”) and Leila Park's 16 is flagged 16/7 (“Ego debt — Humility”). The guide to karmic debt numbers explains what the labels are and how common they are.
What each Soul Urge number means
The readings summarize how the tradition describes the motive behind each number. Treat them as descriptions to test against your own experience.
| Number | Traditional reading of the inner motive |
|---|---|
| 1 | The wish underneath is autonomy: to decide for oneself and to begin things without asking permission. Texts caution that wanting self-reliance can hide a quieter wish to be backed by someone. |
| 2 | What is wanted is closeness and harmony, a sense of belonging to a pair or a small trusted circle. The tension is that keeping the peace can leave one's own preferences unspoken. |
| 3 | The inner drive is to express: to make, say or share something that was only a feeling a moment earlier. It can shrink into entertaining others when the private side of the wish is ignored. |
| 4 | At heart there is a need for order, something solid to stand on and a job done properly. Under pressure the same need can harden into rigidity about how things must be done. |
| 5 | The inner urge is for movement, variety and first-hand experience over secondhand advice. The cost named in traditional texts is restlessness, a pull to leave before anything has deepened. |
| 6 | The motive is care: a home, a family or a community that works and feels warm. Texts warn that the wish to look after people can drift into keeping score of what is owed in return. |
| 7 | What is craved is understanding, with time alone to think and a quiet place to do it. The shadow is withdrawal, where privacy slides into never letting anyone see the working. |
| 8 | The inner pull is toward achievement, influence and results that can be measured. The tension is between wanting standing and wanting to be valued for something other than output. |
| 9 | The inner wish is to be useful to something larger and to close chapters with grace. The edge is giving so widely that nothing is left for the people closest to home. |
| 11 (Master) | A heightened 2: an inner life of acute sensitivity, intuition and a wish to inspire. Traditional readings stress the strain of that intensity and recommend steadiness in daily habits. |
| 22 (Master) | A heightened 4: a deep wish to build something lasting that serves many people. The tension lies between the scale of the aim and the patience each stage requires. |
| 33 (Master) | A heightened 6: a motive of compassion and teaching on a wide scale. Texts note the need for limits, since a wish to serve everyone has no natural stopping point. |
Soul Urge, Expression and Personality
Three numbers come from the same name, and simple arithmetic ties them together. Every letter is either a vowel or a consonant, so the Expression total is the Soul Urge total plus the Personality total.
| Number | Letters used | Maria Elena Santos | Traditionally read as |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soul Urge | Vowels | 29 → 11 | The inner motive |
| Personality | Consonants | 30 → 3 | The impression others get first |
| Expression | All letters | 59 → 5 | The overall equipment |
Here 29 + 30 = 59. The three reductions (11, 3 and 5) do not follow one another, which is why they are read separately. Numerology treats a gap between the inner and outer numbers as something to reflect on, not as a flaw. The Expression number guide covers the number built from the whole name.
Questions to take away
- What do you keep wanting, whatever your week looks like?
- Where does the outer version of you differ from what you want underneath, and does that gap cost you anything?
- Which sentence in your description would you cross out, and what would you write instead?
- If you could ask for one thing without having to justify it, what would it be?
Frequently asked questions
Is the Soul Urge number the same as the Heart's Desire number?
Yes: both names refer to the number made from the vowels of the full birth name. Terminology varies a little between authors, so check the method when comparing readings.
Is Y a vowel in numerology?
Sometimes. In Soul Aura's engine a Y counts as a vowel when the name has no other vowel or when it sits between two consonants, and as a consonant in every other position. Other sources may treat Y differently.
Why is my Soul Urge number different from my Life Path number?
They use different inputs. The Life Path comes from the birth date and the Soul Urge from the vowels of the name, so the two are separate calculations and need not agree.
Do the vowels in middle names count?
Yes, when the middle name is part of the birth name. The engine adds the vowels of the whole name in one pass.
Should I use my birth name or the name I go by?
Use the birth name for the core numbers. A name you go by now gives a different total, which Soul Aura reads as a separate layer. The calculator accepts any name you type, so you can compare.
